One of the most beautiful spots in town. About the sack bearer house: The striking sack bearer house from 1725 served as the guild house for the sack bearers' guild of Sint Anthonis. The sack bearers have been allowed to unload goods brought in by the many grain and malt ships since 1465. The guild and the Zakkendragershuis thus formed an important link in Schiedam's economy. In the roof turret hangs a clock that alerted the sack bearers when there were goods to be loaded or unloaded on a ship. Inside the building is a waiting room for the sack bearers who lived away from the area and would not hear the bell. For the distribution of work, ?smiting' was done: the men dropped dice through a funnel and whoever threw the highest pips got the available work. Despite increasing industrialisation and mechanisation in the nineteenth century, bag carriers remained indispensable for transport. The Schiedam Bag Carriers Guild is the only guild in Europe that still exists.
