The Sukhoi Su-17 'Fitter' was an attack aircraft developed from the Su-7 fighter-bomber by Sukhoi. The new aircraft was successful with a long career within the Soviet Union/Russia. The type was also widely exported within the Eastern Bloc and air forces in the Middle East. Sukhoy developed a long list of variants. Soviet versions were designated Su-17, equivalent export versions Su-22. About three thousand aircraft of all versions combined were built between 1966 and the end of production in 1991. The Soviets made extensive use of the Su-17 in Afghanistan, after the Soviet Invasion.
