The Pontic rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) is an evergreen shrub native to southwest Asia and the Balkans, with large, leathery leaves and striking, bell-shaped flowers that are purple, pink or white. The shrub can grow up to 5 metres tall and flowers in late spring to early summer. Although native to a specific area, it has spread to different parts of Europe.
The Pontic rhododendron has several symbolic meanings: it represents beauty and elegance because of its beautiful flowers, but also danger because of its toxicity. Moreover, it symbolises perseverance and strength because it often grows in rugged, mountainous areas.
