You see the poppy a lot in the wild grass by the roadside or in the meadows in summer. The flowers may look delicate, but they are real go-getters.
The poppy also called poppy is a symbol of comfort, but also of the commemoration of the dead. The poppy owes this symbolism to the battlefields in northern France that were coloured red with poppies after the First World War.
The characteristic colour of the poppy is red. A black part becomes visible at the base of the petals. The flower's four leaves are larger than we are used to from flowers, so they largely overlap. The flower has hairs on both stems and leaves.
What many people do not know is that all parts of the poppy including the milky sap are poisonous to humans and animals.
