Since when gave that later again, Porsche was looking for a cheap entry-level model for the discontinued Porsche 356 and got it by handshake between VW CEO Heinrich Nordhoff and Ferry Porsche.

Initially offered only with an 80 hp 1.7-liter fuel-injected engine (D-Jetronic) from the VW 411 E, which accelerated the 940-kg car to 177 mph. The 914/6, on the other hand, was available with the 81 kW (110 hp).

In the same way they were also used in motor sports. In addition, an engine with 179 hp from the Porsche 911 2.2 S for a 1000 km race on the Nürburgring, such as in 1970, or at FIA hill climbs in Trento Bondone. However, they were much more successful in endurance races than in hill climbs.
Whereas there were also 2.4-liter six-cylinder engine of the Porsche 911 S with 190 hp and the 2.7-liter engine of the 911 Carrera with 154 kW (210 hp), but they were installed only 3x and 8x for the Porsche 916.

Later there was a special production for Ferry Porsche with 260 hp and a test vehicle
for Ferdinand Piëch with 300 hp with the designation 914/8, because in each case an 8-cylinder boxer engine with 2997 cm³ was installed.

The VW-Porsche was built from 1969 to 1976 and most of the 914/4 were produced by Karmann in Osnabrück. The 914/6s were assembled by Porsche in Stuttgart with the 110 hp (81 kW) 2.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine of the Porsche 911 T.
