The port of Rotterdam is the largest port and industrial complex in Europe with a total cargo traffic of 435 million tonnes in 2011. It consists of a combination of various port basins and industrial estates that serve the supply and removal of goods from the ports established (petro) chemical and other industries, and the storage and transshipment of third-party goods for further transport. Rotterdam had the largest port in the world between 1962 and 2004, but this position was taken over by Shanghai. Also Singapore, Kanton, Qingdao, Port Hedland and Tianjin have overtaken Rotterdam as a port in size. However, the port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe.
