About ‘Port’ by Truckpowerr

A port is a partially enclosed stretch of water, which can be used as a mooring or docking area for vessels, especially ships. When the term port is used without clarification or context, it usually refers to a transhipment port, where goods and also people go on or off board. However, ports can differ considerably from one another: there are fishing ports, ports of refuge, museum ports and many others. Another important distinction is that between inland ports and seaports. The latter are usually much larger due to the larger ships and can determine the character of a city: a port city.

The concept of a roadstead is broader than that of a harbour: a roadstead can be a harbour, but it can also be a suitable landing place off the coast, such as the formerly very important Rede van Texel.
