This gentleman was a journalist at the time. Portraying someone is always a challenge, but afterwards he said he recognised himself in this painting. That was incredibly nice to hear.
What makes the canvas entertaining is the colour combination of black (background and shirt) and ochre yellow (jacket). The glasses stand out and reinforce image this once again.
Because the sketch is still partly visible, you get a nice look at the different stages of the painting process. At the same time, this makes the painting interesting and modern. If the canvas were completely filled, the image would look more classical. And, based on what is painted now; can't you already see it before you?
