Prairie dogs (Cynomys) are a genus of ground-dwelling and subterranean rodents in the family squirrels (Sciuridae). They live on the prairies of North America.
Characteristics
The animals can grow about 40 cm long and weigh between 1 and 4 kg. In captivity, they can live 8 to 10 years with outliers to 12 years. Fresh grass is its most common food. The animal got its name from the sharp barking it lets out.
Prairie dogs are social animals, living in several family groups together in one area: a so-called prairie dog village. These villages are located underground, with each family having its own entrance with several rooms. source wikipedia
