The animals can be about 40 cm long and weigh between 1 and 4 kg. In captivity they can live to be 8 to 10 years old with peaks up to 12 years old. Fresh grass is the most commonly used food. The animal owes its name to the sharp barking it makes.
Prairie dogs are social animals that live together in several family groups in one area: a so-called prairie dog village. These villages are located underground and each family has its own entrance with several rooms.
