Prayer mill in monastery, Tibet.
Beautiful large golden prayer wheel in the courtyard of a monastery.
This cylindrical mill, which rotates around a vertical axis, is set in motion by giving it a push.
On the outside of the cylinder is always a prayer or a mantra written. According to Tibetan Buddhism, turning a prayer wheel has the same effect as saying prayers or mantras. When someone starts to turn, he must pronounce the inscription. It needs to be said again when he's done turning. In the intervening period, the mill may be turned as often and quickly as you like.
A commonly used inscription is the mantra: Om mani padme hum.
