This pretty stairway is in Pienza in Tuscany, Italy. Although Pienza is a firm favourite with tourists and these narrow streets get packed with tourists in high season, it is also home to many local people of course. The narrow streets and terraced houses/apartments do not allow for garden space, something quite common in these beautiful old Italian towns, so many residents decorate the front of their houses with plants in pots, usually traditional terracotta pots.
Here we see a stone stairway leading up to an apartment with a balcony above. There is a metal handrail to the left of the stairs, overlooking the narrow passage and climbing plants festoon the stone walls and terracotta pots with plants sit on each of the stone steps making this a very pretty area indeed.
