Every summer a field near my house in the West of Ireland turns purple magenta with the spikes of Purple Loosestrife (Lythum salicaria), creating a beautiful, harmonious scene in the summer evening light with golden dried-off grasses and emerald green pastures nearby, a scene that may be familiar to summer visitors to Ireland's western regions where the flower is a fairly common roadside companion. Here it is abstracted in long vertical brushstrokes, mirroring the tall flower spikes and grasses.
