In 1882, Milwaukee Museum of Fine Arts was founded. It was dissolved six years later. In 1888, the Milwaukee Art Association was founded. In 1911, the Milwaukee Art Institute was built. The institute was built next to the Layton Art Gallery. Alfred George Pelikan was director from 1926 to 1942. The Milwaukee Art Center (now the Milwaukee Art Museum) was established at the Milwaukee Art Institute and the Layton Art Gallery, and in 1957 the collections were merged. The MAM recently gained international recognition with the construction of the white Quadracci Pavilion, designed by Santiago Calatrava which it opened on 4 May 2001.
