Rally raid poster Door het zand – desert trucks

by Sidney van den Boogaard

Rows of dunes on a cream sheet, one for every year of the great desert rally since 1980. Each dune takes the colour of the winning truck make; beneath it sit the year, the driver of the winning crew, the make and the flag. The two dotted dunes are 1989, when there was no truck class, and 2008, when the rally was cancelled. The orange years are the five Dutch wins: De Rooy in 1987, Stacey in 2007, De Rooy again in 2012 and 2016, and Van Kasteren in 2023. The colours tell the rest: the red of the early years, then row after row of the same blue of the make that held the rally for years, and the yellow that takes over the last dunes. The legend keeps the tally: Kamaz 19, Tatra 6, Iveco 6, Mercedes-Benz 5, Perlini 4. For anyone who follows the rally every January and knows the crews by name.

This work is part of the Roll of Honour collection: sports history as a data print. Each print takes one sport and turns its whole roll of honour, from the first edition to today, into one graphic image, every name and number cross-checked against two independent sources.

Independent work, not affiliated with or endorsed by any league, federation, team or athlete; the data comes from Wikipedia and other public sources. A great gift for the fan who knows their sport's results by heart, for the living room, the study or the clubhouse.
