Oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an annual or biennial plant in the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). It is an alloploid plant, originating from a cross between Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38, of which 20 come from Brassica rapa and 18 from Brassica oleracea.[1]
Products of the rapeseed plant include, besides rapeseed oil and straw, rapeseed meal remaining after pressing. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals and sought after as a concentrate feed for livestock. It is an alternative to imported soya.
