Reapers Resting in a Wheat Field (1885) by John Singer Sargent.
Sargent had American parents, but was born in Italy and lived most of his life in Europe. He became particularly famous for his portraits (Rodin called him "the Van Dyck of our time"), but toward the end of his life he also devoted himself to painting landscapes. He made a total of about 900 oil paintings, 2000 watercolors and numerous sketches and charcoal drawings.
Sargent's style is realistic, but often coarse, in which he still clearly shows the characteristics of the person being portrayed. Portrait of Madame X in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is considered by some to be his masterpiece. In some other paintings he experimented with impressionist techniques, as in Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood.
