Red clover is a perennial plant with compound, triangular leaves. The plant can grow 15-50 cm tall. The stem is hairy. The lower leaves are round and long-stemmed, the upper leaves almost sessile, oblong and covered with hairs on the lower and upper sides. In the center of these leaves is a light spot. Next to the upper leaves are ovoid leaves.
Red clover blooms from May through fall with pink to red flowers. The inflorescences are globular to ovoid and have supporting leaves at the base of the upper leaves.
In grasslands intended for mowing, red clover is often sown. This is because of its nitrogen-fixing capacity and high protein content; this allows more and better quality crop to be harvested.
