The red ochre cream for which the Himba is famous is made by stamping the ochre stone (hematite) into small pieces. The fragments are then mixed with butter, slightly heated by smoke and applied to the skin. In addition, the red layer seems to help against burning solar radiation, while the skin remains clean and moist and to some extent blocks hair growth on the body.
