About ‘Red Slave Houses’ by Bart Hendrix

At two locations along the Pekelmeer, you can see slave huts in different colours. The white slave huts stand by the white salt pan, whilst the ochre-coloured slave huts can be found by the red salt pan. Although they are ochre-coloured, they are known as the red slave huts. The coral-stone slave huts were built in 1850. This was, incidentally, 13 years before slavery was abolished on Bonaire.
On Bonaire, many slaves from Africa were put to work in the salt pans (there are eighteen salt pans on the coral island) and on the plantations.
The West India Company (WIC) also used Bonaire as a penal colony for soldiers who had misbehaved. Like the slaves, these convicts were forced to carry out hard labour in the salt pans of the coral island. However, the first people forced by the WIC to work in Bonaire’s salt pans were the indigenous people. The indigenous people were the original inhabitants of the Caribbean island.
