Red panda in the woods, China. The small panda or red panda or cataract is an endangered species that lives in Asia. Like the giant panda, it eats bamboo. The little panda is not a bear, but belongs to the family of cat bears (Ailuridae) of which it is the only living species. The little panda is more related to raccoons than to bears.
