King Redbad has been proclaimed the greatest Frisian of all time. He was the pagan king of the Frisian kingdom which stretched from Belgium to Denmark. He had to fight the strong and powerful Frankish empire who wanted to christianize Friesland and take away the faith in a rough way, for example by killing and cutting down holy trees. Redbad fought back and at one point even managed to take the city of Cologne, deep into the Frankish land. Now the Frisians could live in freedom for a while and worship their own gods, although not much later this culture came to an end. I am currently working on a graphic novel adaptation of the novel Rêdbâd by Willem Schoorstra, so there will be a graphic novel about the illustrious king. What better tribute to the king than a print of him on the wall? That is the attention that this historical figure deserves.
