Often they get to you before you do and stay stiff to see what's going on. They have heard something but then rely on their nose to judge what is going on, they don't have very good eyes. As soon as they smell you they usually take off with big jumps so I always make sure I have the wind against me. This morning I quietly walk from the forest onto a field and the group in which this young buck is walking around doesn't notice me. After approaching them a bit closer, I sit down quietly. I wait patiently until they come a little closer. When you walk towards them with your big telephoto lens right in front of your face you don't look like a human being either, I think. With me it works at least this morning
Still they don't realize I'm here and I sit still with the camera with 400mm on a tripod at the ready. I know, a cough once and they have me by and his way, and so this morning I get the chance to be part of this group for half an hour. A somewhat older buck and goat stay a bit at a distance but this young man approaches me grazing calmly up to about 15-20 meters. As soon as he walks a bit further away again I crawl away and let them continue with their breakfast and I'm getting ready to go home as well.
