RIEL - The Regte Heide is a nature reserve of the Brabants Landschap and about 250 hectares in size. It lies against the Riels Laag and the Ooijevaarsnest.
De Regte Heide is surrounded by stream valleys and has a large height difference for Dutch standards. It can vary up to five metres in height in this area, which is quite unique for this region. To the west lies the stream valley of the Oude Leij and to the east the stream valley of the Poppelsche Leij.
In addition, the Regte Heide is home to a number of burial mounds from the Middle Bronze Age. This is also known as the Vijfberg. All kinds of grave goods came to light here during excavations in the 1930s. They are located at the spot where you can easily cross the stream. Now there is a bridge there, but it was different 4,000 years ago. It was a ford and when you crossed it, the burial mounds were the first thing you saw. A signal to travellers that the locals' ancestors were watching over them.
Throughout the area you will find many different species of plants, butterflies and birds, so bird lovers will get their fill here.
