In 79 AC, the town of Pompeji was completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The fatal eruption covered the town with a metre-thick layer of volcanic ash and rock. It was not until the 17th century that the first remains of the buildings were uncovered. Now about 60% have been excavated and many frescoes and remains of victims in houses and palaces have emerged.
