About the artwork

The face of a young woman with pale, peachy skin materialises from a deeply shaded background in this vertical portrait painting. Shown from her waist up, her body is tilted to the right and her face turns towards us. She has grey eyes, a round nose and her pink lips are slightly parted. A golden veil covers long strawberry-blonde hair and falls over the shoulders of her dark dress. The dress has a high, white lace collar and a gold chain hangs over her shoulders and on her chest. Painted with mostly deep browns and earth tones, the light falling on her face and hair creates an aura-like effect.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Leiden, 15 July 1606 - Amsterdam, 4 October 1669) was a Dutch painter, etcher and draughtsman. He is widely considered one of the greatest painters and etchers in European art, and the most important Dutch master of the 17th century. His work belongs to the Baroque period and is visibly influenced by Caravaggism. His remarkable mastery of the play of light and dark, often using sharp contrasts (chiaroscuro) to draw the viewer into the scene, led to vivid scenes full of drama.
