The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was a single-engine fighter aircraft used extensively by the USAAF during World War II. The aircraft proved to be a formidable opponent during air combat, but proved equally useful as a ground attack aircraft. Not only the United States, but also other Allied air forces had this aircraft in their arsenal. The P-47C was the first variant to be used for combat missions in late 1942. The first combat mission took place on 10 March 1943 during an interception mission over France and the first air victory was achieved on 17 August during an escort mission. Some modifications took place that led to the P-47D, of which 12602 were built. After the war, the aircraft were delivered to many South American countries until the 1960s.
