About "RheinOrange (7-59672)"

by Franz Walter

About the artwork

An oversized, orange steel plate rises vertically into the sky at the mouth of the Ruhr into the Rhine. The sculpture causes discussions again and again. "Is that art?" some ask. For others, however, the seemingly "simple" piece of steel is one of the significant works of art in the Ruhr region. For still others, the cyclists on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path or the participants in the Ruhr Marathon, the sight of the Rhine orange is the longed-for destination after the exertion. However one may view the sculpture, there is no denying the atmosphere on site. You have to experience it yourself.

The inspiration of the Cologne sculptor Lutz Fritsch for the work of art was:
The mouth of the river, the largest inland port in Europe, Duisburg as an important location for the steel industry, for technology and as the site of the Lehmbruck Museum as an important museum for modern sculpture in Europe should link all aspects of Duisburg's economic and cultural life. As a visible sign of this, he created an oversized steel slab 25 meters high, seven meters wide and one meter deep, similar to those used in steel production. For the "glow" of the slab, as in the steel mill, the artist chose for his sculpture the color RAL 2004=pure orange. This gave rise to the name RHEINORANGE.
