A rice field (Malay: sawa or sawah) is a piece of land, diked or walled in by low mud walls for the cultivation of rice. The fields are laid out in terraces, where necessary in a hilly landscape. Because rice grows in water, water management is very important. The rice fields are constantly under water until the rice is ripe and can be harvested. An additional advantage of the flooding is the control of weeds.
