About ‘Rijsdam in the Wadden Sea’ by Tjamme Vis

Reed dams in the Wadden Sea near Holwerd. A reed dam is a long, narrow dam made of wooden piles and reeds, found in the Wadden Sea. They are found mainly to the west of the ferry jetty to Ameland.
They were originally constructed for land reclamation. These water-permeable dams slow down the current, allowing silt to settle. This enabled salt marshes to grow and eventually new land to form. Nowadays, they are mainly maintained to protect the existing salt marshes and prevent erosion, rather than to reclaim new land.
The reed dams are a striking feature of the landscape near Holwerd and are particularly visible at low tide. They also attract many birds, as the salt marshes and mudflats form an important foraging area.
