The banded dragonfly is a small heidelibel measuring around 28-35 mm. Its most distinctive feature is the dark brown band that runs across the top half of its wings. This is what distinguishes the banded dragonfly from other hedgehogs. The abdomen of adult males is deep red and the pterostigmas are red. The abdomen of the females is yellow and the pterostigmas are cream in color. The legs of both male and female are black.
The nymphs live in the vicinity of still or slightly flowing water, such as streams and ditches. The vegetation must be open and the water must be completely in the sun. Seepage water is almost always present in the habitat of Eurasian red hummingbirds.
