About "Rococo pop art portrait of a woman in crazy colours"

by Frank Daske

About the artwork

Rococo originated in France in the 18th century and is characterised by opulent ornamentation and playful details. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Pop Art movement emerged, which was inspired by mass culture and advertising. Although it is often seen as "anti-elitist", it shares with Rococo a love of detail and visual abundance. Rococo flourished at a time of social change and enlightenment. Rococo was an escape from the austerity of the Baroque and reflected a desire for sensuality and pleasure. The apparent lightness and beauty of Rococo often concealed a subtle irony. Pop artists also took an ironic look at the modern world. They took everyday objects and transformed them into works of art in order to scrutinise the superficiality of consumer society. The author has tried to bring both movements together on the basis of crazy colours.
