About the artwork

Originally founded in the 13th century as a castle belonging to the Mainz to secure the territory, it became the property of the Ysenburgs in 1476. It attained its greatest importance as the residence of the collateral line Ysenburg-Büdingen-Ronneburg in the 16th century. The castle therefore has very significant Renaissance architecture, including the distinctive domed helmet of the keep, the Zinzendorf Building and the New Bower. During the Thirty Years' War, the core castle was initially largely burnt out, and a few years later Ronneburg Castle was plundered. In the years that followed, it lost its function as a fortress and seat of nobility and served as a refuge for social fringe groups such as the Moravian Brethren. Its importance as a monument was recognised around 1900. The good preservation of the medieval and early modern castle buildings has since made it a well-known excursion destination in the region.
