A beautiful record of the sunset in the beautiful Delfshaven. Delfshaven is a part of the municipality of Rotterdam.
Delfshaven came into being in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to give the city of Delft a connection to the river Maas. Since then the ships could reach the Nieuwe Maas from Delft via the Delftse Schie and Delfshavense Schie. Around the lock arose the port town 'Delfshaven'. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A setback in growth took place when at the end of the Hoekse and Kabeljauw quarrels (around 1490) the Hoekse and Kabeljauw wars wreaked havoc. At the beginning of the sixteenth century Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.
