'Warehouse master' is the plural of 'warehouse master'. A warehouse master is an overseer of a warehouse. Today, Van Dale lists warehouse master, warehouse keeper and stack master as synonyms. As a plural form, pakhuismeesters and pakhuismeesteren were used arbitrarily side by side. At the time, it was also the name of an official appointed by the V.O.C. and later by the government in charge of supervising the warehouses in which colonial goods were stored. Pakhuismeester(en) was initially exclusively the name of an activity, a profession, but it later permeated the business names of companies engaged in that service and related trade.
