At the foot of a high sand dune is a small tent with next to it a large 4x4. Two red chairs beside it on a blue mat. A trail of our footsteps crosses the lower sand dunes: our path up. The dunes of the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter, in Oman are among the largest sand dunes in the world. To our surprise, small tufts of desert grass can even be found there. We drove our rental car up a road that was not on any map. In the dune valley, we chose a dune to camp on. Wild camping is an adventure. With no one around us, we spent New Year's Eve here. In the morning, we climbed the dune and saw in the warm morning light how small our encampment is in this huge desert landscape. Every moment the light changes here: from blue to purple, pink, yellow and orange.
