Sable grasshoppers (Tettigoniidae) are a family of insects belonging to the order right-wing (Orthoptera). With more than 6400 species, it is a very large group containing a wide variety of species, both in appearance and lifestyle. Despite the name - grasshoppers, sable grasshoppers are related to the longitudinal locusts (Ensifera), to which all crickety forms belong, and not to the short locusts that include all the typical grasshoppers.
Sable grasshoppers belong to the larger species of the right wing, they are divided into different subfamilies, triba and genera, some species are also found in the Netherlands and Belgium. Most species eat plants but some also eat animal material.
