About the artwork

How a teenager made one of the world's most famous cakes
One evening in 1832, the famous politician Prince Klemens von Metternich was hosting particularly distinguished guests. To impress these noblemen, he ordered his cooks to make an unforgettable dessert. He said:
"Make sure I don't have to be ashamed tonight!"
This assignment could not have come at a worse time. The head chef had fallen seriously ill, and at the last minute, they asked sixteen-year-old apprentice chef Frans Sacher to create a new dessert.
It must not have been easy for the teenager to come up with and make this on such short notice. In doing so, von Metternich didn't want an airy, frothy pastry but a dry, compact cake. Get down to making something special out of that, it seems to me.
Franz Sacher, however, was not discouraged. He rolled up his sleeves and baked a chocolate cake, cut it into two equal halves and spread apricot jelly on each half. Then he poured over the whole thing with a thick layer of liquid chocolate. So simple, but this new creation by Franz was and still is a great success.
