Diego preferred to see Frida in clothes of the Indian Tehuana people whose women were known to be beautiful, sensual, strong and intelligent. It is precisely in this culture that women have the upper hand.
In addition, Diego felt that Mexican clothing was created by the people for the people.
Frida certainly did not change her personality purely to meet Diego's political ideals of beauty. An old childhood photo shows her mother dressed in Tehuantepec clothing. So the tradition goes back much further in time.
