About "Sacred corridors and bas-reliefs at Borobudur"

About the artwork

Under a sky of alternating clouds and light, the galleries of Borobudur temple reveal their magnificent bas-reliefs, finely sculpted in volcanic stone. Each panel recounts an episode from the life of the Buddha, a moral lesson or a scene from everyday life in ancient Java.
The stones, with their patina of age, reflect shades of gold and grey that change with the light of day, giving the site an atmosphere that is both mystical and alive. Walking through these narrow corridors, pilgrims follow a spiritual path symbolising the ascent to enlightenment, step by step.
This age-old décor bears witness to the artistic genius and profound spirituality of the Sailendra kingdom, who built this 9th-century jewel. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Borobudur is not just a place of worship: it is an open stone book of Buddhist wisdom, an invitation to contemplation and respect for the passing of time.
The beauty of these sculptures, still intact despite the centuries, makes this temple one of the most impressive masterpieces in South-East Asia.
