Sagrada Família – Organic Sanctuary

by MSmulders

This image transports you into the marvellous forest of concrete and stone created by Antoni Gaudí. The towering pillars branch out at the top like the boughs of giant trees. Take a look at the round, illuminated medallions on the columns: they almost seem to hang from the stone structure like luminous fruits. In the background, you can see the altar and the playful light filtering through the organic forms, making the space seem almost as if it were breathing.

Inspired by a trip to Barcelona, I wanted to capture Gaudí’s vision: architecture that does not feel like a building, but like a living natural phenomenon. Whilst York Minster embodies the classical human order, the Sagrada Família showcases the pure power of the imagination and the symbiosis between nature and stone.

The photograph conveys a cool, monumental yet animated atmosphere. The clean verticality gives the work a spacious and ‘breathing’ feel, whilst the soft light at the bottom of the piece invites introspection.

By visually drawing the eye into the depth through the powerful vertical lines, this work makes any space appear taller and more spacious. It is intended as an eye-catcher for lovers of modern art, design and travel, and, together with the vault of York Minster, forms the ultimate dialogue between history and innovation.
