This drone photo of the ship the Passat in Lübeck-Travemünde offers a breathtaking view of this historic windjammer, gracefully moored at the quay. The Passat was built in 1911 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg by the shipping company F. Laeisz. She belongs to the famous fleet of fast sailing ships, also called Flying P-liners. The Passat was mainly used to transport saltpetre from Chile to Europe and grain from Australia.
With a length of 115 metres, a width of 14.4 metres and a mast height of 56 metres, the Passat is an impressive sailing ship. Her total sail area is as much as 3,800 square metres, which enabled her to reach high speeds, up to 33 kilometres per hour in optimal conditions.
Following the advent of steam and motor ships, the Passat was decommissioned in 1957. Instead of being scrapped, she was rescued and converted into a museum ship and youth hostel in Lübeck-Travemünde, where she can be admired to this day. She serves as an educational centre, offering insights into maritime history and life aboard a windjammer.
