Saint-Claude, historic shopping street by Arjan Warmerdam

Old shopping street – Saint-Claude

In Saint-Claude, a narrow street winds its way past weathered façades, closed shop fronts and old signs that serve as a reminder of the street’s former bustle. The horizontal composition emphasises the rhythm of the buildings, the succession of doors and windows, and the distinctive signs above the shops.

The eye naturally follows the subtle line in the paving downwards, past ‘la bonneterie’, ‘confection’ and the former riding school. It is precisely these details that give the image its unique character. They reveal how commerce, residential life and everyday life were once directly intertwined here.

The façades have not been smoothed over or restored to serve as mere decoration, but bear the marks of wear, discolouration and age. This gives the street a genuine, lived-in feel. The weathered stones, wooden doors, shutters and cables together form a layered urban landscape in which every detail tells a story about the history of the place.

In the background, the street opens out towards the greenery of the Jura. This contrast between the dense built-up area and the mountain landscape highlights how Saint-Claude is nestled between the city and nature.

This photograph is part of a small series on Saint-Claude. Whilst the vertical version places greater emphasis on the height of the façades and the surroundings, this horizontal version focuses primarily on the old shop fronts, the typography and the layout of the street. An atmospheric wall hanging for lovers of France, old city districts, architecture and street scenes where the traces of the past are still visibly present.
