The Westerschelde coast between Hoofdplaat and Nummer Een lies directly along very deep water with high flow velocities. Consequently, there have been many dike breaches over the centuries. The presence of a series of inlays in the area was intended to reduce the loss of land in the event of a calamity. A more modern measure to protect the vulnerable coastline was the construction of a sort of wide forebay in front of the existing sea dike. Until recently this Voorland van Nummer Een was an even and uniform area, above the reach of the tides and therefore with very limited natural value. In 1994 a nature development plan was implemented which gave the area a more attractive layout. The foreland now includes a hollow, a varied salt marsh and a bird island.
