Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935) was a Scottish painter and one of the leading representatives of the Scottish Colourists, a group of artists who were strongly influenced by the French Post-Impressionists. Peploe is known for his vibrant still lifes, landscapes and portraits, which are characterised by bold colours, broad brushstrokes and skilful use of light. He often painted floral arrangements, but also views of the Scottish coast and the south of France. Peploe's work is characterised by a synthesis of traditional Scottish art and modern European painting.
