The San Juan Mountains are a mountain range that are part of the Southern Rocky Mountains, a relatively isolated mountain range that is considered the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains. The San Juan Mountains themselves form one of the southernmost mountain ranges of the Southern Rocky Mountains and are located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Colorado and northwestern New Mexico. The San Juan Mountains played an important role in the gold and silver mining industries of early Colorado. Larger settlements such as Creede, Lake City, Silverton, Ouray and Telluride are all former mining camps.
