Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.
The artwork appears at its true size, so you cannot scale it in AR. Want a different size? Close AR and pick the size on the product page.
Still nothing? Open this page in Chrome or Safari. AR does not work in the browser of apps such as Instagram or Facebook.

About ‘Scriptorium of Restoration’ by Retrotimes

This remarkable work of art appears to have come straight from a medieval manuscript, yet conveys a surprisingly contemporary message. Within a richly decorated frame, we see three craftsmen at work around a printing-press-like apparatus. Rolls of parchment bearing elegant illustrations flow through the machine, whilst the men are busy repairing, adapting and redesigning.

The Latin title “Repairo” – to repair – forms the core of the image. What at first glance appears to be a historical scene reveals, on closer inspection, a deeper symbolism. Here, not only is material being repaired, but meaning is also being rewritten. The combination of swords, a shield and a quill suggests a tension between strength, protection and knowledge. The process of restoration becomes almost a struggle in itself: a battle to preserve the past whilst simultaneously transforming it. The style, with its fine lines, muted colours and decorative border, evokes the atmosphere of old books and illuminated manuscripts. Yet the theme feels surprisingly modern. In an age where everything is quickly replaced, this work reminds us of the value of restoration, craftsmanship and attention to detail.

This artwork appeals to the imagination of lovers of history, symbolism and graphic art. It is an intriguing eye-catcher that both evokes nostalgia and invites reflection on how we deal with what is broken – and how we can give it new meaning.
