Maaike Wycisk sees her work as a voyage of discovery in which different images and materials merge into new creations. Inspired by Pop Art she creates colourful works of art in which classic and digital come together.
Maaike Wycisk was born in 1979 in Spijkenisse, near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. After some wanderings through the Netherlands and America she now lives in Switzerland.
She was always interested in coast and started experimenting with digital art. This is also what most of her work consists of: combinations of faces with different structures and materials.
In most of her works she chooses a female face as subject. Sometimes she uses famous faces, like Audrey Hepburn, Frida and Marilyn Monroe. In other cases, the face is less well known, which accentuates the aura of mystery hidden behind the piece.
The effects in her art are reminiscent of peeling walls or posters, reminding us that beauty does not last forever. Her art is therefore an art in itself, focused on creating beauty. Aesthetics prevail over meaning, the artistic process prevails over message.
