About ‘Senegal; Gorée; Void in Form’ by Dirk Lahuis

Introduction: Art at Gorée is often a means of expressing the unspeakable. Where words fail to describe the suffering of slavery, symbolism and form take over. All over the island you will find monuments and artworks that invite the visitor not just to look, but to feel what was lost here.

Description: This detail shot shows part of the modern monument commemorating slavery. The construction is intriguing and immediately raises questions. We see abstract shapes pierced with holes. These holes are not just openings; they symbolise the emptiness that slavery left in African society. Each hole represents a person, a story, a bloodline that was abruptly interrupted or taken away. The design is deliberately left open, allowing air and light to play through it, but the 'wounds' in the material remain visible. It is a visual representation of lack. The rough texture and organic shapes are reminiscent of bones or weathered wood, underlining the fragility of human existence. It is a silent tribute to those who were rendered invisible.

My passion for photography started early, around 1970. In the era of analogue photography, I bought a second-hand Agfa Iso Rapid Ic from my savings. Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach. At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
