Sheep sheds are indispensable in the Texel landscape. These characteristic sheds are scattered across the island - always with the flat side facing east - and used to store cattle feed. Many barns have now fallen into disrepair, but a number have been restored and are now even listed as monuments.
What is striking about Texel's sheep pens is that they are all built with the flat side facing (north) east. This is because the wind on Texel comes mainly from the (south) west. The entrance door of the pen is therefore always in the lee. source wikipedia
